An essential investment in the future
There are an estimated 20,000 school buildings in Flanders and Brussels, covering an area of 16.6 km2. But the state of education infrastructure in Belgium leaves much to be desired. Many school buildings suffer from aging, poor energy performance and a lack of modern facilities that respond to contemporary educational methods and needs.
In Flanders, the infrastructure issue received a major boost since 2010 through PPP programs such as Scholen van Morgen and Scholen van Vlaanderen and the DBFM model. Similar initiatives are in the pipeline in Wallonia and Brussels. But despite the efforts of all stakeholders, major investments in both new construction and renovation remain necessary to make our school buildings future-proof and give our youth every opportunity.
Decree on open schools
Open schools as engines of society
Schools increasingly occupy a central place in village life. Since March 1, 2024, the decree on open schools came into force, more and more schools are making their infrastructure available to associations and organizations, outside of normal school hours.
With the decree for open schools, the Flemish Government wants to further increase the extracurricular use of school buildings to meet a growing need for space for (sports) associations, youth clubs, after-school care and municipal or provincial services.

Basisschool Edison
Eind 2024 namen de leerlingen en leerkrachten van basisschool Edison in Hoboken hun intrek in de vernieuwde gebouwen aan de Onderwijzersstraat. De school onderging afgelopen jaren een indrukwekkende metamorfose en transformeerde van een gesloten complex tot een inspirerende leer- en leefomgeving met een open gezicht naar de omgeving.
Basisschool De Oogappel
De nieuwe school wordt geïntegreerd in een centraal gelegen park en sluit perfect aan bij de omliggende woonwijk. Een publiek voorplein is de ontmoetingsplaats voor leerlingen, ouders en buurtbewoners en creëert een buffer tussen de school en de woonomgeving.
School in Kalken krijgt grondige vernieuwing na afgerond project in Laarne
Het project omvat een duurzame nieuwbouw die naadloos aansluit bij het authentieke, reeds gerestaureerde schoolgebouw. De plannen voor deze twee ambitieuze projecten werden ontworpen door ABETEC architecten & ingenieurs.
GBS Lubbeek
Het project werd aangekondigd in 2022 toen KU Leuven, UZ Leuven en de gemeente Lubbeek een samenwerkingsovereenkomst ondertekenden om het leegstaande kasteel De Maurissens op de ziekenhuiscampus nieuw leven in te blazen. Toen was er sprake van de opening in 2025, maar dat wordt nu januari 2026.
De campus Kantienberg in Gent wordt vernieuwd en herbestemd
De campus Kantienberg van de Arteveldehogeschool in Gent zal een transformatie ondergaan, ontworpen door Grosfeld Bekkers van der Velde Architecten in samenwerking met PUUR interieurarchitecten. Het oorspronkelijke gebouw, een prijswinnend ontwerp van Crepain Binst Architecture uit 2009, wordt aangepast om beter te voldoen aan de hedendaagse behoeften en om de verbinding met de stad te versterken.
